Brand visibility in AI: how many answers mention your brand

Updated on

Brand visibility in artificial intelligence is the percentage of answers from models such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini or Google AI Overview in which your brand appears at least once when they are asked a question that is relevant to your business, and it is the basic metric Mirvel uses to tell whether a company exists or not for the assistants that more and more people rely on to decide what to buy or whom to hire.

Visibility of a real project, overall and by model

In this example project the brand appears in 491 of the 1,503 answers analyzed, which is 33%, but that figure hides large differences between models, from 48% in Perplexity down to 22% in Google AI Overview.

Real data from a production project: 1,503 responses analyzed between August 6 and October 4. Brand names have been replaced with generic labels.

What exactly does visibility measure?

Visibility answers the simplest and most important question of all, which is whether the name of your company shows up or not when someone asks an artificial intelligence about your industry, and it does so by counting answers rather than mentions, so a brand named five times in a single answer adds exactly the same as a brand named only once.

It is calculated over all the completed answers of a project and shown both as an overall figure and broken down by model, because each AI assistant answers differently and a global average can hide the fact that your brand shines in one of them and is invisible in another.

How should you read the result?

There is no universal figure that separates good visibility from bad, because it depends on how many companies compete in your industry and how specific the questions you measure are, so the most useful approach is to read the number against your competitors, against its week-by-week evolution and against the breakdown by model, which usually points clearly at where to concentrate your effort.

It is also worth remembering that the models are not alike: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overview rely on a web search and therefore reflect what exists on the internet today, whereas Claude is measured with its general knowledge, so a gap between the two groups often tells you whether the problem lies in what is published about your brand or in what the models learned about it. Google AI Overview, for its part, does not appear for every query, and when Google does not show a summary the run is recorded as completed but without content, so those empty answers count toward the total and can make the visibility measured in this model lower than in the others.

What can you do when visibility is low?

No single lever guarantees results, but there are reasonable lines of work that rely on the other metrics: look at which sources the models cite in the answers where your competitors do appear and get a presence in them, publish content that answers the questions your customers ask directly and completely, and keep the way your brand is described consistent across your website, directories and industry media.

Because visibility is measured regularly with the same method, you can check weeks later whether those actions have moved the indicator, something that is impossible to know from a one-off manual query to an assistant because each individual answer can vary.

Frequently asked questions

How is AI visibility different from traditional SEO ranking?
Traditional ranking measures where a page appears within a list of results, whereas AI visibility measures whether your brand is part of a written answer, which is not an ordered list and can name several companies, just one or none at all, so it is a different phenomenon that needs its own measurement.
Why does visibility change from one week to the next if I haven't done anything?
Language models do not always return exactly the same answer and the sources they consult change over time, so a single query is not reliable, which is why Mirvel repeats the prompts regularly and calculates the percentage over hundreds of answers, reducing the noise and making the real trend visible.
Can visibility be measured in a specific language and country?
Yes, each prompt is defined with a country and a language, and the models that support localizing the search receive it so that the answer resembles the one a user in that market would get, although not every model offers the same degree of control over this.
